The 2010 Super 14 season started in February and finished on May 29. Each team played a round-robin series against 13 teams, totaling three and half months worth of match play. A record number of referees was included in this year's schedule, with at least eighty per cent of games being referred by Merit Panel referees.

For performance evaluation, various indicators were used to assess performance. These measures were tested in both defensive and attacking situations. However, most studies were focused on attacking-related variables.

According to some studies, winning teams had fewer tackles. This could be explained by rule changes favoring defensive teams in breakdown situations. Other variables that had a greater impact on success were higher average carrying metres, lineout success against the opposition ball and clean breaks.

Some studies have shown that point scoring does not correlate with match outcome. These were however based on data from lower levels competitions and didn't include information on team behaviour or multiple confounding factor. It is hard to determine the relationship between performance and point score and draw any conclusions regarding its importance in rugby.

Another study examined the correlation between performance and tackle contest events. These are measures of defense. This indicated that tackles completed were more likely to be successful for the winner. While a few studies drew inconclusive results, these studies were able to identify a positive correlation between points scored and turnovers.

K-modes cluster analysis was used for identifying common patterns in play, such as lines and scrums. These patterns emerged from the physical constraints of the game, as well as self-organising interactions between players.

Pretoria's Bulls have been the most consistent tournament team. They have won fourteen consecutive matches at home, and have been unbeaten in the tournament since they won the title in 2012. Their forwards have speed and are capable of going out wide. Despite their track record, however, Bulls haven’t lived up to their potential and aren’t the team to save a slump at the altitude.

The Hurricanes, while a formidable team on their own, have yet to prove their true potential. They will lose in Christchurch. However, they will have All Blacks centre Conrad Smith back and test halfback PiriWeepu back. This combination is strong.

The Cheetahs are a solid team on their day, but will have to overcome the loss of star forward Heinrich Brussouw. Juan Smith is their coach and they haven't been as popular as the Stormers. They've been much better in recent years and should be able to beat the Sharks.

While the Waratahs may be a solid side on any given day, they're hoping for a win with an extra point. That should secure a place for the semi-finals.
